Essor Index method
What the index measures, how it is calculated, and its limitations. Formula “score-v1”. The index reflects your habits, not your health.
What it is
The Essor Index is a score from 0 to 100 that summarises your habits over the last seven days, calculated on your iPhone. The weights are editorial choices made by IE DIGITAL, published here; they make no claim to scientific validation. The index does not measure your state of health or any risk, and does not replace a doctor’s advice.
Six dimensions
- Activity · 25%
- Average of two scores over 7 days: exercise minutes, compared with the WHO (2020) guideline of 150 to 300 minutes of moderate activity per week (150 min gives 80, 300 min gives 100); and daily steps (2,000 steps gives 0, 10,000 steps gives 100).
- Sleep · 20%
- Average duration, compared with the National Sleep Foundation guideline (7 to 9 hours per night for an adult aged 26 to 64: 100 within this range), and bedtime regularity (standard deviation of 30 min or less: 100; 2 hours or more: 0).
- Recovery · 15%
- Today’s resting heart rate and heart rate variability, compared with your own average over the last 28 days (14 days minimum): 50 corresponds to your usual average.
- Fitness · 10%
- VO2 max estimated by Apple Watch, compared with the median for your age and sex in the FRIEND registry (Kaminsky et al., Mayo Clinic Proceedings, 2022): the median gives 50, 10 points above it gives 100.
- Nutrition · 15%
- Fibre (ANSES guideline: 30 g per day) and plant diversity over 7 days (30 different plants gives 100), based on the meals logged in Essor.
- Habits · 15%
- Share of key actions completed over 7 days (3 per day).
Calculation
Each dimension gives a score from 0 to 100. The index is their weighted average, over the available dimensions only: missing data is never made up, the remaining weights are redistributed and the displayed confidence level goes down. The displayed value is smoothed over 7 days (exponential moving average). The details of each dimension, its data and its contribution are shown in the app: Today › Why…?
Habit Age
Habit Age expresses the same dimensions in years, alongside your actual age: a dimension at 100 moves it towards −8 years, at 0 towards +8 years, with the total difference capped at 8 years. At least 7 days of data are needed. It is not a biological age: it reflects your habits, not your health.
Blood test reports
Your blood test reports are never used in the index or in Habit Age.
